Phew it’s been awhile. Between the monsoon rain conditions, getting a little flooding in the finished basement in the first storm, a little flooding from the leak in the roof in the second storm, probably need to get one of the rugs replaced, definitely need to get the roof repaired, getting unseasonably warms temps taking advantage and enjoying them, and the IEP meeting it has been crazy around here. I also am trying to gear up for April which is Autism Awareness month.
Off I go. This morning was the long awaited IEP review meeting to discuss moving P to another classroom. We had to go in early and have Gran take P to school. Poor Gran had a little trouble finding the school entrance, but a friendly police officer help her out. This meeting they pulled in the big wigs, with the district SPED director and the district autism specialist attending besides the usual crowd of the OT, ST and teacher. I had thought this might happen and went in prepared to do battle if necessary. Luckily all that was uncalled for and it was a very informal meeting. They talked about all the wonderful things P was doing. My favorite story was from the ST. P was being walked back to class from his therapy session and did a sneaky u-turn to get in line with the kindergarten class and tried to go with them to their classroom. Hilarious. The consensus from the therapist and teacher was to move P up a level to the appropriate school program. We will get the formal write up in the mail, hopefully with no surprises. I am always wary of a meeting that was so informal.
The next step is logistically and within the laws (yep lots of laws involved when doing and IEP), is getting P moved. Because he annual IEP is so close we have to have the annual IEP meeting before he is moved. We can’t move P with just an annual review, because he will be going to another school. The preference for all involved is to get P moved when he comes back from April vacation. So we have a lot to get done before April vacation to make sure he is moved when it is least disruptive to him and his schedule. We are gonna have to push the school to get everything done in time but we think it can be done. So now it truly seems that P is gonna have a brand new school and lots more friends to play with.
