Snowy days December 9, 2009

The first snow of the season we had was over the weekend. Only a few inches of the fluffy stuff. Sunday morning we all woke up, I told my son to go to the window. He looked out the window and said “snow”. Ha ha! I don’t remember teaching him that word but I know I used it before. It’s truly mind boggling how much he remembers and retained. But never mind about that right now. What great fun it is to see how much my son loves snow. I had forgotten how much I liked snow when I was little. I would go sledding with my father and sister pretty much every snow storm. I don’t remember the cold. I just remember having the best time.

So there wasn’t enough snow to go sledding and unfortunately my son was still getting over a cold so I didn’t want to risk him playing outside and getting sick again. So Monday was really the first time he got to go out and see the snow first hand. When I picked him up at school he managed to find a ledge with snow on it that hadn’t been touched yet and went head first in the ledge. He came up for air with a big mouthful of snow and humming and chewing the snow. I had to pull him away from the ledge to get him in the car. He only agreed to come once he had grabbed two handfuls of snow to eat on the ride home. Then we arrived home. We have a curved walkway where it is surrounded by grass. And on Monday that meant snow on both sides. So as soon as I let him out of the car he bolts. Heads straight for the snow and does a face first, open armed, free fall into the snow. I would have been worried about him being hurt if I could have stopped myself from laughing hysterically. And then in an instant he was off again only to repeat the same thing three times. I tried half heartedly to coax him inside in between my hysterical laughing. I finally had to pick up the giant 45 lb 3 yr old and carry him into the house. I had to strip him at the door because he had managed to get soaking wet from head to toe in the five minutes he was outside. He was devastated to come inside and take his nap. And Tuesday the excitement from snow was no different. He found that same ledge and some more untouched snow to eat. And on the way into the house he was running circles in the snow to see his foot prints. I had to pick him up and drag him in again.

Wednesday and it’s snowing outside as I writing this. We have a good 3-4 inches on top of the old stuff. It’s supposed to turn over to rain. Gosh I hope not. I can’t wait till after my son’s nap. Where I can finally bundle him up in the proper snow attire and enjoy the fluffy stuff. It will be the first winter that I will truly and honestly enjoy the winter since my son was born. The first winter that he just might, just maybe, be able to tell me that he is cold and wants to come in. I even have a special treat of GFCF hot chocolate. I won’t forget these snowy days. I won’t forget how long it was that I waited for my son to say “snow”.
